Year 6 Jackets
Early in first term parents will be receiving order forms
for Year 6 jackets. The students are always excited about wearing this
special jacket as it is unique to Year 6, and has the names of both students
and teachers on the back. The children usually wear these jackets all
year round then have them signed by friends and teachers on their last
day of Primary School!
Literature Program
Our program is focused on "Literature Appreciation"
of quality novels of "substance". Only quality novels with a
social message are selected! Groups meet once a week on Tuesdays at 9.00am
for an hour. We set up small groups of 6 - 8 students of mixed ability
and assign an adult to read the novel whilst children follow. The leader
drives the session initiating and promoting discussion of plot and character,
answering questions and generally leading the group through the book.
Some of the popular novels in our program are:
'The Power of One', 'Mao's Last Dancer', 'Chinese Cinderella', 'The Snow
Pony', 'A Bridge to Terabithia', 'The Good Liar', 'Parvana', 'Parvana's
Journey', 'Dougy', 'A Fortunate Life', 'A Different Sort of Real' and
'The Bombing of Darwin'.
We would be unable to offer such a valuable Literacy activity
without parent support. Expressions of interest will go out early in Term
1. We appreciate parents giving up their valuable time to assist the Year
6 children every week. These Literacy sessions will continue for the whole
year.
Early Morning Maths
In Year 6 students are expected to take responsibility for
their learning and actively pursue strategies to assist their progress
or further their understandings of a concept. The Year 6 teachers offer
before school maths classes once a week on a Wednesday from 8.30am - 9.00am.
All students are invited to participate regardless of their ability. The
session topics are nominated directly by the students depending on their
own particular needs or interests. These before school sessions will once
again commence throughout Term 1. Please discuss this with your children
and support them to come along each week.
Homework
All Year 6 students have received a "Homework Guidelines"
overview which should now be pasted in to the front of their homework
book. Generally homework is issued on a Monday and is due back on the
Friday of the same week. We ask for your support and encouragement in
ensuring your child completes and submits home tasks. Their homework should be approved and signed by you
each week.
Student Leaders
The student leaders of 2009 will be appointed within the first 2 weeks of the school year. They consist of School Captains, House Captains and Junior School Council Representatives. Leadership roles are held in high regard at Beaumaris North Primary School and we encourage all students in Year 6 to act as leaders within our school community.
Diaries
The students are supported and encouraged in the use of their diaries as a strategy to assist with time management and organisation. We have given them key dates for the semester, and expect them to note homework tasks / due dates etc. The students have also been asked to have their diary signed by an adult every Thursday. This aims to provide an additional means of correspondence between parents and teachers and ensures students are using their diaries effectively. Please remind your child to check their diary every night! In High School the diary becomes a vital tool of communication between home and school.
Premiers Reading Challenge
Year 6 will again take part in the Premiers Reading Challenge. For the past three years, the Premier of Victoria has invited students to take up a challenge to improve their reading skills and to discover the joy and wonder that can be found in books. It is not a competition, but a challenge to each student. Students in Years 3 to 10 are challenged to read 15 books by 31 August 2009. The Reading Challenge booklists contain almost 5,000 titles and include fiction, non-fiction, plays, poetry, short stories and graphic/cartoon novels.
Buddy system
Year 6 will again pair up with their Year 1 buddies to take part in different activities. Students in Year 6 are able to act as role models to the Year 1’s and are able to help their buddies with any problems they may have in the classroom and playground. It is a great opportunity for the older students to improve their communication skills while lending a helping hand.
Peer Mediation
All Year 6 students will be trained as Peer Mediators, which is based on the principles of Conflict Resolution. Year 6 students work in mixed gender pairs in the yard to assist the younger students in resolving minor social or relationship issues. Any behaviour which contradicts the “Cool Rules” is handed over to the yard / duty teacher to deal with. The students wear bright yellow tops which make them easily identifiable in the school yard. The 2009 Peer Mediators will define a fine commitment to the responsibilities which come with the role.
