Natural Disaster Websites

Year 5 are currently undertaking a project on natural disasters. For some great websites that will help direct you to some interesting information click here.

Camp

The 2009 Year 5 Camp will be held at CAMP COONAWARRA from Monday November 23rd through to Friday 27th. The camp is nestled on 140ha of wonderful bushland on the Iguana Creek, East Gippsland Victoria. The camp features a fantastic 2.6ha lake which is ideal for water activities. This is an excellent venue run by friendly, energetic staff who conduct challenging outdoor activities. This experience is a highlight for the students.

Buddies

A very exciting part of Year 5 is the Buddy system where our older students are matched with one or two Prep children and take on the role of a friend and guide. The Year 5 students spend many recess and lunch times introducing their buddies to the school facilities and appropriate play behaviour. They are someone to turn to if help is needed and play a very important role in assisting the Prep team. Students also participate in some formal shared lessons with their buddies.

Bike Education

Year 5 students participate in Bike Education in Term 4. This program extends the skills they practised within the school grounds in Year 4 and takes them out onto the surrounding roads. They will learn vital strategies and skills to ensure safe and responsible riding.

Homework

Year 5 homework is issued on a Thursday and is due back the following Wednesday. Students are advised if there are any exceptions to this. If the students are given a special project to complete the appropriate time frame will be indicated on the project outline and 'normal' homework will be suspended.

Premier's Reading Challenge

Each year students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Premier's Reading Challenge. This worthwhile program culminates in the student's names being printed in the 'Age' newspaper, as well as receiving a certificate of achievement. Year 5 students use this challenge to form part of their home reading.

Student Leadership

Year 5 students are given many opportunities throughout the year to take on additional responsibilities outside the classroom. This includes our representatives on the Junior School Council and the responsibility of whole school rubbish management. Students are encouraged to embrace the different roles in preparation for Year 6 where they are expected to be the student leaders of our school.

Transition

Year 5 students spend a day at Sandringham Secondary College (Beaumaris Campus) to assist in promoting a smooth transition from Primary to Secondary school. This will be held in Term 4. Students will be advised of the date as soon as it is available.

National Assessment Program

In May, as part of the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), national tests will be held in literacy and numeracy for all students in Australia at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. These tests will replace the current State and Territory-based assessments (AIM) and have the support of all Education Ministers. See http://www.naplan.edu.au/ for further information.
