Early Years Literacy & Numeracy

In Year One the children are involved in a variety of Literacy and Numeracy activities. Many of these activities are supported by parental or other assistance. We really appreciate the extra time and involvement provided by our helpers and we would hope that parents always feel welcome in our classrooms.

Incursions / Excursions

This year the children will be participating in incursions/excursions that are related to our Units of Inquiry. Throughout a variety of activities, the children's understanding will broadened. In Term 1 the 'Bully Busters' team will be visiting the children to demonstrate strategies for interpersonal development. In Term Three, a theatre company will visit the Grade 1's and 2's to perform a well known fairytale as a part of our 'Time for a Story/Literature' theme. In Term Four, our inquiry unit on Animal Habitats will be enriched by a visit to Melbourne Zoo.

The other Units that we will be researching are:

  • Harmony / "School's Cool"
  • Our Community
  • Rain, Hail or Shine
  • Christmas (incorporating Carols night)

Buddies

Year One children will have opportunities to work with their Year Six buddies throughout the year. These activities foster co-operative group work and are centred on building positive relationships and developing creative work.

Maths Bags

In Year One the children will be allowed to bring home the maths bag once or twice per year. You are encouraged to work with your child together on a variety of different activities so that your child's findings and discoveries can be shared with the class.

Intensive Swimming

During the year the children will participate in an intensive swimming program. As well as learning correct stroke technique they will learn about water safety and appropriate behaviour near water.
