Early Years Literacy & Numeracy
In Preps our aim in English is to establish firm foundation skills in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Our Early Years Literacy Program will commence in Term 2 and we will be looking for Parent Helpers to assist with the class reading groups. In Maths we use a 'hands-on' approach to learning to help develop maths concepts and understandings.
Incursions/Excursions
This year the Preps will be participating in a variety of incursions/excursions related to our Units of Inquiry. These include:
Term 1 Unit of inquiry: How we organise ourselves
"Schools are organised to help us learn and play."
The children will meet their grade 5 buddies and participate in a variety
of fun activities together throughout the year.
Term 2 Unit of inquiry: Where we are in Place & Time
"Family histories provide an insight into culture, family, change
and the individual."
We will be celebrating Grandparents Day during this Unit of Inquiry by
inviting the Grandparents along for a special morning together.
Term 3 Unit of inquiry: How the World Works
"Buildings can be made of many different materials which can affect
their design."
The Preps will go on a local walk to observe the building materials used
in design in the local area.
Term 4 Unit of Inquiry: Sharing the planet
"Our use of the Sea impacts the creatures that call it their home."
The Preps will be heading off to the Melbourne Aquarium as part of this
Unit of Inquiry.
Other Activities on the Prep Calendar
Responsible Pet Ownership
Participating in this program teaches the children how to live safely
with dogs. A representative from the Department of Primary Industries
brings along their pet dog to demonstrate responsible pet behaviour and
awareness.
Fire Safety
The preps will have a visit from the local fire brigade. They will learn about basic fire safety and will be given a tour of the fire truck.
Prep/Kinder Transition Incursion
The current preps will be host to the 2010 preps and they will all enjoy a story telling performance by "Fairy Lou."
'Bully Busters'
The Preps will take part in the 'Bully Busters' program where they will take part in a fun interactive workshop on how to build resilience and manage playground conflict.
Swimming
In Term 4 the children will participate in an Intensive Swimming Program. As well as learning correct stroke technique they will learn about water safety and appropriate behaviour near water.
